image dell'Università di Milano Bicocca The Department of Sociology and Social Research (DSRS) strives for excellence in the empirical inquiry on contemporary society and in the study of social theory. The DSRS was founded in January 1999 with the creation of the Faculty of Sociology at the University of Milano Bicocca.

The Department is not only composed of professors of the Faculty of Sociology but also scholars and professors of other Faculties of the University resulting in a strong interdisciplinary presence.

Curently the DSRS is composed of 61 professors ( 22 full professors, 21 associate professors, 18 assistant professors and several young researchers and PhD students).

Among the Departments most relevant research areas:

  • gender and generations: identity and difference
  • family studies
  • inequality, social exclusion and poverty
  • social time and quality of life
  • local government and social policies
  • employment, unemployment and job policies
  • mobility and social stratification
  • migration and intercultural relations
  • organizations and enterprise networks
  • territorial polices: housing, urban partecipation and mobility
  • public sphere and citizenship rights
  • comparative study of welfare systems
  • education and professional learning

The DSRSis part of inter-university research centres such as the Consortium for Political and Social Research of Michigan University (USA) and the European Consortium for Political Research of Essex University (UK).
The Department is aiming promote and carry out both national and international projects, with particular attention being given to comparative aspects and analysis. In this sphere, Faculty participates in international networks and in European projects (European Framework, European Science Foundation, Equal, Community Action programme to promote Gender equality between men and women 2001-2005).
